The IB Maths AA course is divided into five core topics:

As of recent curriculum updates, the IA is marked under the following criteria: Criterion A: Problem specification (4 marks) Criterion B: Abstraction (6 marks) Criterion C: Computation (4 marks) Criterion D: Interpretation (6 marks)
Both the Maths AA and AI Internal Assessments have an identical structure and are graded using the same assessment criteria. However, IAs for both courses differ in their focus. Since Maths AA is more concerned with theoretical mathematics, these IAs will focus on exploring an abstract mathematical concept, deriving formulas, or formal mathematical proofs. Since Maths AI is interested in real-life applications of maths, these IAs generally explore statistical analysis, data modeling, and solving practical, real-world problems.
Due to AA Math's highly rigorous and theoretical approach, the course is designed for university degrees heavily rooted in maths. For example, mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. In fact, most competitive engineering, physics, and pure mathematics programs worldwide explicitly state a requirement for Maths AA HL (or an equivalent). The deep calculus and algebraic foundation of AA is considered essential preparation for STEM degrees.
For both SL and HL students, Paper 1 is a non-calculator exam. However, calculator use is permitted for both SL and HL students in Paper 2, as well as in Paper 3 (HL only).
For the Maths AA syllabus, select content has been reduced with no additional content being added. These removals are outlined below. SL Removals: Financial applications, Bivariate data. HL Removals: Financial applications, Proof by counter example, Bivariate data, Euler's method.
For the 2029 exam, which begins teaching in August 2027, the Maths AA assessment format remains similar, though exam papers are slightly shorter and more focused. Paper 1 & Paper 2 (SL): Reduced to 75 marks (down from 80 marks). Paper 1 & Paper 2 (HL): Reduced to 100 marks (down from 110 marks). Paper 3 (HL): Reduced to 50 marks and 60 minutes (down from 55 marks and 75 minutes). Internal Assessment (IA): The criteria have been adjusted to prioritise the mathematical product and inquiry-driven learning rather than just rote learning.
