IB Middle Years Programme Tutoring

The IB’s five-year Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed to be a primer for entering the IB Diploma Programme. Our IB MYP tutors contend it is similarly challenging and methodical. The flexible nature of the MYP programme allows teachers to create their own assessment and reporting procedures.

This can cause remarkable disparity between schools and make it difficult to find relevant resources online. The IB MYP attempts a holistic, “big-picture” educational methodology which has a steep learning curve when transferring from other curricula.

Students thrown into such a rigorous program often experience whiplash from the transition, and struggle to navigate the new sets of expectations and required skills.

BartyED’s Private IB MYP Tutors

IB MYP has changed, sometimes drastically, over the years; BartyED’s IB MYP tutors regularly liaise with MYP teachers and curriculum developers to appreciate those changes and account for them in our structured programmes. BartyED’s IB tutors have their pulse on changes in the curriculum and have years of experience designing curricula of their own.

For top marks, BartyED’s IB MYP tutors guide candidates through intensive writing programmes and mathematical interventions, and provide general structure and support to anything ranging from planning revision schedules to outlining essays.

Over the years, BartyED’s MYP tutors have secured top marks across all subjects, whether it be Mandarin or History, English or Maths. If you wish to book a lesson or enquire about your specific circumstances, feel free to contact us by phone at 2882 1017 or email

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MYP?

Our tutors often find that parents are unsure of the meaning of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) offered by international schools. As a five-year middle years curriculum for students aged 11-16, it is intended to prepare for the IB Diploma Programme.

The eight subjects we offer IB MYP tuition for, are segmented as follows:

  1. Language Acquisition (e.g. Mandarin)

  2. Language and Literature (e.g. English)

  3. Individuals and Societies (e.g. History)

  4. Sciences (e.g. Chemistry)

  5. Mathematics

  6. Arts

  7. Physical/Health Education

  8. Design

Is IB MYP suitable for my child?

The short answer is that it depends on the school. Outside of IGCSE, the MYP has become an international standard for pre-college/high school studies, although our tutors also coach for smaller, school-specific curricula. The particular materials used in the curriculum are generally decided by schools’ own staff. Nonetheless, the assessment criteria are universal and the MYP is recognised by essentially all schools around the world.

How will my child be assessed in IB MYP?

MYP candidates receive marks out of 8 for each subject. There are no exams, so students are assessed based on submitted assignments and class projects. The most important of these are referred to as ‘summatives’, or assignments that reflect the summation of what has been learned. Our tutors recommend to always prioritise putting in maximal effort for summatives!

Is IB MYP better than IGCSE?

Our MYP tutors are divided on this issue. British schools are more likely to offer the IGCSE, and the opportunities it offers to specialise in certain subjects can make the transition to A-Levels easier, given that the two are part of the same British continuum of curricula. On the other hand, the MYP demands the kind of reflective thinking needed for success in the IB Diploma. It is usually easy to switch between the two with the oversight of a qualified MYP tutor to help consolidate key material.

Does IB MYP prepare for the IB Diploma?

In a word, yes. However, students may find the IBDP a radical step up from the MYP; it is in the first year of the IBDP that students often begin to feel overwhelmed and get in touch with BartyED’s expert MYP tutors.

Can my child switch from IB MYP to US High School or A Levels?

Yes. Graduates of the IB MYP are recognised by almost all schools as the equivalent of a 10th Grade/Year 11 graduation. Our MYP tutors regularly prepare candidates for success in all international school curricula.
