BartyED was founded in 2016 to raise the bar on what private tutoring in Hong Kong could look like. Our team is made up of full-time, dedicated educators who leverage their diverse academic backgrounds to provide thorough support across international curricula.
Our story
Why BartyED exists
Jerome Barty-Taylor founded Barty Education and Development in 2016 after noticing a persistent gap in Hong Kong’s private tutoring market. There was no shortage of tutors, but most were focused on guiding students through a workbook, paying only the barest attention to individual needs. Many students with neurodiversity — whether dyslexia, dysgraphia, or ADHD — were failing to fulfil their academic potential. There was also a dearth of tutors who could engage gifted and 2E children in need of academic extension. This gap was the founding premise of BartyED.
“Learning differences are often not picked up until the end of primary school: students can present as polite and agreeable, but fail to keep up with their classmates. These students can adapt and eventually excel in an academic setting, given appropriate support at the right time in their development.”
Since then, BartyED has expanded its mission. We still provide tailored interventions and mentoring for students with learning differences, as well as customised extension programmes for gifted children. In addition, we provide academic support across the full range of international curricula. BartyED recruits full-time professional tutors from Top 100 universities, covering IB Diploma and MYP, IGCSE, A-Level, and AP exams. We offer a boutique college admissions service focusing on T10 and T20 US universities and Oxbridge. The core team is small by design: elite educational professionals who remain dedicated to raising the bar for the Hong Kong tutoring industry.

How we hire
Three phases. Most candidates fail.
Jerome designed BartyED’s hiring process after years of interviewing tutors and finding that subject knowledge and the ability to teach it were consistently different things. The process has three phases, each designed to surface something the previous one cannot.
Formal interview
Led by Mark Malone, Director of Admissions
Our Director of Admissions personally oversees this phase. As well as going through the candidate’s CV, he is looking for the emotional intelligence and charisma required to hold the attention of a student in a classroom. Candidates who make it through are shortlisted for phase two. The majority do not.
Written academic exam
Led by Hannah Searson, Director of Studies
Our Director of Studies assigns a personally devised exam based on the curriculum knowledge the tutor will require. Her exams are focused and rigorous, aligned with her belief that tutors must demonstrate not only an awareness of syllabus content, but also impeccable exam technique and communication skills.
Engagement session
Led by Jerome Barty-Taylor, Founder and Managing Director
Jerome leads final candidates in a role-play exercise. From learning support interventions to disengaged teens, this session is designed to emulate real-life scenarios to check that the tutor can adapt to the unexpected and support students fully.
After hiring
Six months of curriculum training
Once hired, every tutor completes a six-month training programme led by our Heads of STEM and English and Humanities, supervised by the Director of Studies. Training covers IBO-led syllabus development, mark-scheme analysis, SEN support techniques, and assessment-format changes across all curricula BartyED teaches. Ongoing professional development continues after training, including IBO workshops and internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
The result is that when a student sits down with a BartyED tutor for the first time, that tutor has already been tested rigorously and understands the exact support the student will need.

Jerome Barty-Taylor
Founder and Managing Director

Jerome founded BartyED in 2016 and oversees every tutor match personally. He supervises the training programme, and is often the initial point of contact for families. He teaches History, French and English across IB, IGCSE, and A-Level.
Beatrice Cheung
Director of Operations
University of York
In addition to leading the firm’s daily operations, Beatrice is an expert in learning interventions for young and neurodiverse students. She teaches English, Maths and Science through the age of 16.
Hannah Searson
Director of Studies
University of Oxford
Hannah oversees our students’ academic development. She keeps parents informed through regular communication and leads our rigorous training programmes. She teaches English, French, Philosophy and History across IB, IGCSE, and A-Level.
Mark Malone
Director of Admissions
University College Dublin
Mark leads our boutique college and university admissions service, and is at the cutting edge of changes to US and UK Top 20 admissions. In addition, Mark teaches English, Philosophy, History and Global Politics through IB, IGCSE, and A-Level.
Our philosophy
Mentoring, not just content
The premise behind BartyED is that content knowledge is only half of what a student needs. A tutor who knows the content of a syllabus can still fail a student who arrives to sessions disorganised, anxious about exams, or uncertain how to structure their revision. BartyED tutors are trained to address all factors hindering student progress.
In practice, this means that every BartyED engagement begins with a diagnostic session: identifying not just content gaps, but study habits, exam technique, and any underlying concerns about the student’s workload or confidence. The plan built from that session is specific to that student, not a generic programme applied to anyone in the same year group.
It also means that BartyED’s relationship with a family often extends beyond the immediate exam cycle. Students who come to us at IGCSE level frequently continue through IB Diploma or A-Level. Some have been working with the same tutor since they were ten years old. That continuity is something no tutoring platform or short-term agency arrangement can replicate.
