Oxbridge refers to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. While there are many excellent universities in the UK, these two are among the oldest tertiary institutions in Europe and have exemplary reputations for academic achievement. Entry is highly competitive.
Oxford and Cambridge have enjoyed a 900-year rivalry, but which is better often depends on personal preference! In terms of academics, the two universities are almost always at the top of the UK university rankings, meaning that they both offer excellent options for high-achieving students.
No. While all Oxford and Cambridge candidates are expected to demonstrate strong academics (both in grades and outside the classroom), a 45 on the IBDP isn't necessary for a successful application. Generally, most Oxford courses ask for a minimum of a 38, and Cambridge asks for a 40.
Oxbridge entry is achieved through a UCAS application. This means that students are expected to provide a personal statement and academic transcript. In addition, some courses require a writing sample or a completed entrance test, and all candidates must interview in order to receive an offer. Finally, candidates must meet their offer by fulfilling the requirements (e.g. a specific grade on their final exams).
Above all else, Oxbridge interviewers are looking for academic potential, and sincere interest in the subject. They understand that not only are candidates going to be working on this course for 3 or 4 years, but the interviewers themselves will likely be the ones teaching the candidate! That means if they do not believe you can be taught, they will not issue an offer.
