Find the perfect IGCSE tutor at BartyED

Around half of international schools in Hong Kong and worldwide offer the IGCSE (we also tutor GCSE, but it is only offered in the UK). Unfortunately, candidates often feel the pangs of stress by the time exam season rolls around because they lack the confidence and academic skills to get a high score in the IGCSE exams. Perhaps they also lack an expert IGCSE tutor.

Tutoring is one solution, but if you want it to work in the long-term, you need the right IGCSE tutor. The perfect IGCSE tutor is not easily found, in part because of a lack of focus on results.

BartyED’s IGCSE in-person and online tutors stand out for our personalised one-to-one support. Results in the exams are always priority number one, and our carefully tailored in-person and online IGCSE tutoring programmes reflect this.

A typical IGCSE tuition programme with BartyED begins in three areas:

  1. An assessment session with an expert private IGCSE tutor to evaluate your child’s strengths and weaknesses and ensure the best student-tutor fit.

  2. Breaking down candidates’ IGCSE courses into chunks for targeted support, with particular focus on consolidating skills with appropriate modelling.

  3. Holistic and empathetic IGCSE tutoring of content and exam technique, based on the learning style of each individual student.

Over the years, BartyED’s private IGCSE tutors have overseen IGCSE exam success for families in Hong Kong, with our expert IGCSE tutors securing places in boarding schools and high schools around the world.

If you wish to find out how an expert BartyED IGCSE tutor can help your son or daughter succeed, do not hesitate to send us an email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do universities look at IGCSE scores?

US and UK universities typically require transcripts for secondary school qualifications, though it depends on the individual university how important IGCSE scores are for admission. For UK universities, more weight may be given to IGCSE grades for a more comprehensive overview of the candidate’s skills, since they take only three subjects for A-Levels.

In general, passing grades in IGCSE are necessary to move onto further study and for university admission. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that good performance on the IGCSE is crucial, especially for more competitive and prestigious universities.

BartyED’s private IGCSE tutors have the knowledge and experience needed to help their students achieve their IGCSE goals.

What is the difference between Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE?

Both Edexcel and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) are exam boards which offer IGCSEs, and their qualifications have equal value. The main difference between the two is the structure of their examinations.

Cambridge uses a tiered examination system: they offer the option of entering at the Foundation or Higher level, with more difficult questions given in Higher level papers.

For Edexcel, tiered entry applies only to Maths. There is only one set of question papers for all other subjects, which means that both easier and more difficult questions will be in the same paper. A BartyED IGCSE tutor is well-versed in both systems.

Can my child drop an IGCSE course?

Yes, dropping an IGCSE is possible, as long as your child is still taking a minimum of five subjects. For IGCSE, Math, English (English Language and English Literature), and Science (may be split into Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; or into two combined Science GCSEs) are core subjects at IGCSE, while four additional subjects are chosen. If your child is struggling, dropping a course may not always be the best option, especially if this may be a prerequisite subject for an A-Level or IB course.

Support from a BartyED IGCSE tutor would be the best option in this situation. Our expert IGCSE tutors have extensive experience coaching struggling learners, through a holistic and empathetic teaching model personalised to each student’s learning style. This guarantees a productive learning environment for our tutors to improve and develop candidates’ skills.

What's the best way to study for the IGCSEs?

The best way to study independently for the IGCSEs is to practise with past papers, read through mark schemes and rehearse model answers. There are also helpful online prep resources available through Google.

For subjects such as English, BartyED’s expert IGCSE tutors advise reading as widely as possible to understand the conventions and styles of English grammar and literary technique. However, many students will experience that finding materials online is not the best way to work on their own weaknesses, as it is hard to discern precise areas and ways of improvement independently.

BartyED’s team of IGCSE tutors adopts a customised programme that guarantees academic success through careful tailoring and holistic teaching.

Should I choose IGCSE or the MYP for my child?

There are merits to both IGCSE and MYP, and both are internationally recognised; we tutor both. British schools are more likely to offer IGCSE if they offer A-Levels at the high school level, as this allows students to specialise in certain subjects that make transition to A-Levels easier.

The IB Middle Years Programme, or MYP, is usually offered in IB schools, as it prepares students for the emphasis on reflective thinking in the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). However, it is common for students to take IGCSE and then IBDP, or MYP and then A-Levels, and this is generally an easy transition.
