IGCSE TUTORING
Expert IGCSE Biology Tutors
in Hong Kong
IGCSE Biology builds a strong foundation in the principles of Biology, from anatomy to life cycles and evolution. Like all IGCSE Sciences, IGCSE Biology is often the first formal science exam encountered by students, leading to confusion over not only the challenging content, but regarding exam technique as well. BartyED has a team of expert IGCSE Biology tutors with years of experience ready to assist students in the rigorous and fascinating programme of IGCSE Biology.
Common IGCSE Biology challenges
| The challenge | How BartyED helps |
|---|---|
|
Distinguishing between command terms |
One of the trickiest aspects of IGCSE Biology exam technique is determining what questions are asking students to accomplish. Not only do examiners throw extraneous information at candidates to test their ability to sift for relevant information, but candidates are expected to understand the difference between a ‘Determine’ question, and an ‘Evaluate’ question. Guidance in this area from experienced professionals is often essential. |
|
Applying abstract knowledge |
As with all science subjects, IGCSE Biology requires students to consider and understand abstract concepts. It can be difficult for students to envision the make-up of a cell, or the functions of certain proteins. BartyED's Biology tutors provide opportunities for students to consolidate their knowledge regularly. |
|
Memorising detail |
One of the key challenges of IGCSE Biology is the memorisation of essential content. More so than the other sciences, Biology requires students to retain a vast array of information. This is why BartyED's experienced tutors help students begin revision early, providing them with bespoke resources and revision techniques to enhance student knowledge. |

| Quality marker | What it involves | Impact on teaching |
|---|---|---|
3-phase hiring process |
Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style. |
A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants. |
Rigorous training programme |
Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies. |
The exam boards know their own specifications, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects. |
On-going professional development |
Whether in exam board workshops on the latest changes to the IGCSE Biology specifications and marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, our IGCSE Biology tutors enjoy continued professional development. |
International curricula like the IBDP, A-Levels and IGCSEs are subject to change and adaptation. It's essential for teaching quality that our IGCSE Biology tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students. |
THE BARTYED DIFFERENCE
Why BartyED for IGCSE Biology Tutoring
Prioritising mastery over drilling
Instead of providing students with a set of worksheets to be completed, our IGCSE Biology tutors focus on working with the student to improve their understanding. While resources such as worksheets and past papers play an important role in this process, BartyED's approach is notable for prioritising mastery of content.
Bespoke support
Our expert IGCSE Biology tutors focus on providing support to the individual student. They do not work from a single textbook, but rather let the student inform them of their difficulties in the subject so that the tutor can support them more efficiently and effectively. BartyED believes in treating each student's individual academic journey as unique.
Experienced specialist tutors
Our expert Biology tutors are specialists in the subject, and graduates from top global universities, including the University of Durham, University of Birmingham, and HKU. IGCSE Biology students can trust that they are learning from experts in the field with a genuine passion for their subject.

IGCSE Biology exam boards
IGCSE Biology is offered by the three main IGCSE exam boards: Cambridge International (CIE), Pearson Edexcel, and Oxford AQA. While all three cover similar or identical topics throughout the syllabus, there are nevertheless key differences in assessment structure, and the focus of the curriculum.

| Exam board | Syllabus approach | Assessment structure | Grading scale |
|---|---|---|---|
Cambridge International (CIE) |
CIE employs a structured approach, and has a slight emphasis on human biology. While all exam boards encourage rigour in candidates, CIE is the most frequently used IGCSE exam board in Hong Kong. |
Typically requires two exam papers (Papers 1 & 3 for Core candidates, and Papers 2 & 4 for Extended candidates). Candidates must also complete a practical exam, or Paper 6, a theoretical alternative to the practical. |
CIE offers two grading scales for their IGCSE Biology pathways: the A* to G grading scale or the 9 to 1. Core candidates' scores are limited to a maximum of a C/4. |
Pearson Edexcel |
Pearson Edexcel provides a strong focus on rigorous structure and foundations, and this applies to IGCSE Biology. There is also an emphasis on eventual progression to A-Level. |
This syllabus comprises two compulsory papers with a range of question styles and topics. |
Graded on the 9 to 1 scale. |
Oxford AQA |
The Oxford AQA syllabus has an emphasis on enquiry-based learning, and the overall understanding of the scientific method. |
2 examined papers. Paper 1 focuses on recall, while Paper 2 focuses on application of knowledge. |
Graded on the 9 to 1 scale. |
WHAT WE COVER
Explore other subjects we tutor
Most candidates sit IGCSE Biology through their school, and in this case, students do not select their own exam board. The Biology department at the school will have a pre-existing relationship with the relevant exam board. However, some candidates choose to take IGCSE Biology as an individual, private candidate. In this instance, they can select their preferred exam board based on their needs and preferences.
While not strictly necessary to have an IGCSE Biology to study A-Level or IBDP, the content of IGCSE Biology is generally covered in schools by the time students reach their final two years. If not, students will likely find themselves struggling to keep up with the fast-paced curriculum, and risk falling behind.
This is dependent on the student's individual strengths, weaknesses and, frankly, preferences. However, abstract topics like protein function can be challenging to grasp. Additionally, many IGCSE Biology students find that the range and depth of content that is required to successfully complete the exam is daunting, meaning that an early start on content consolidation and memorisation is crucial.
