How IGCSE History is assessed
IGCSE History students develop historical knowledge and analytical skills across the two‑year course. Assessment varies depending on whether the student is sitting Edexcel or CAIE, with each board offering a different combination of source‑based, essay and depth study components.

WHAT WE COVER
Explore other IGCSE subjects we tutor
IGCSE and MYP are two different curricula. MYP programmes typically do not culminate in final exams, whereas passing IGCSE History requires students to sit and pass their exam papers at the end of the course.
IGCSE History depth studies are 2 shorter historical periods studied during the course. Students are expected to know events, key figures, dates and statistics in substantial depth, and to make connections between events.
IGCSE History is not a requirement for IBDP or A‑Level History. While it often sets students up for success, students arriving from other curricula, or who did not study IGCSE History, are able to take the subject further at IBDP or A‑Level.
In IGCSE History, students are expected to comment on key linguistic features of a source such as tone and language choice. They should also be able to comment on the value and limitations of the source. BartyED’s IGCSE History tutors cover source analysis techniques in detail during lessons.
The relative difficulty of History and Economics depends on a student’s strengths and preferences. Both are popular IGCSE subjects but draw on very different skills. Economics requires stronger quantitative ability, while IGCSE History demands strong essay writing and source analysis.
