Common IGCSE Maths challenges

The challenge How BartyED helps

Understanding formulas

Our IGCSE Maths tutors are adept at explaining the logic behind commonly applied formulas. This helps students to better memorise when and how each formula can be applied.

Acquiring all marks on a multi‑step problem

Many IGCSE Maths students report struggling to acquire all the marks on an extended 6‑mark question. Our IGCSE Maths experienced tutors typically find that students forget basic components, such as writing out their workings neatly and logically. At IGCSE level, these exam techniques are essential.

Developing confidence with proofs

While many proofs are not part of the IGCSE syllabus, some simple algebraic and geometric proofs are required. Students typically struggle to explain proofs mathematically, resulting in lost marks. BartyED’s tutors address this directly, going through each proof to ensure full understanding.

Advanced probability

One of the trickiest topics on the IGCSE Maths syllabus is advanced probability. The logical reasoning skills required are challenging for many students. Our IGCSE Maths tutors are experienced in developing a thorough student understanding of this topic.

Quality marker What it involves Impact on teaching

3-phase hiring process

Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style.

A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants.

Rigorous training programme

Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies.

The IB examiners know their own curriculum, so it’s essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects.

On-going professional development

Whether in exam board‑led workshops on the latest changes to IGCSE Maths marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, our Maths tutors enjoy continued professional development.

International curricula like the IGCSE, IBDP and A-Levels are subject to change and adaptation. It’s essential for teaching quality that our IGCSE Maths tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students.

THE BARTYED DIFFERENCE

Why BartyED for IGCSE Maths Tutoring

Mathematics-specialist tutors

Our IGCSE Maths tutors are experts; graduates from Durham, Manchester and Imperial College London, they understand how to support IGCSE Mathematics students across all tiers and exam boards.

Exam technique for Mathematics

Many students find aspects of exam technique for IGCSE Mathematics tricky, from navigating formula sheets to managing time effectively. Our IGCSE Maths tutors work with students to develop their exam strategies and support a strong performance on the day.

Content support across all courses

The content of IGCSE Mathematics can be overwhelming, whatever the specific course. BartyED’s focus on long‑term support allows candidates to consolidate ideas as needed and provides additional opportunities for development throughout the course.

Personally vetted by Jerome

Every BartyED IGCSE Maths tutor sits a supervised written exam reviewed personally by Jerome, Hannah and the Head of the Mathematics and Science Department before joining the team. For Mathematics, this includes not just an IGCSE paper, but IB exams and a roleplay exercise to assess teaching ability.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

Success stories

Our students have gone on to Oxford, Edinburgh, UCL, Duke, Brown, and Harvard.

How IGCSE Maths is graded

Across the two‑year course, IGCSE Maths students develop strong logical reasoning and analytical skills. These are then tested in a series of exams, the content of which depends on the syllabus followed and whether the student is taking Core/Foundation, Extended/Higher, or Additional IGCSE Maths. Our IGCSE Maths tutors are experienced in supporting all IGCSE courses.

Course CAIE Edexcel

Core / Foundation

CAIE’s Core Mathematics IGCSE is designed for students aiming for grades C to G. Paper 1 does not allow a calculator, but a calculator is required for Paper 3. Core Mathematics has reduced content compared to its Extended counterpart, making it a good option for less confident students.

Edexcel’s Foundation Mathematics IGCSE targets students aiming for grades 1 to 5. Both papers are equally weighted and both require a calculator. Foundation Mathematics has reduced content compared to the Higher course.

Extended / Higher

CAIE’s Extended Mathematics IGCSE is designed for students aiming for grades E to A*. As with Core Maths, Extended candidates sit both a non‑calculator and a calculator paper. Most students are encouraged to take this tier.

Edexcel’s Higher Mathematics IGCSE targets students aiming for grades 4 to 9. As with Foundation, Higher Maths requires a calculator in both papers. The content is more demanding, but most students take this tier.

Additional / Further Pure Maths

CAIE’s Additional Mathematics IGCSE is a separate qualification taken alongside the Extended course. It offers more challenging content and suits strong students, or those intending to study Maths at HL in the IBDP or at A‑Level.

Edexcel’s Further Pure Mathematics IGCSE is designed for students who want more challenging content. It cannot replace the Higher tier and must be taken as an addition to the existing course.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we get asked most about IGCSE Maths.

IGCSE and MYP are two different curricula. MYP programmes typically do not culminate in final exams, whereas passing IGCSE Maths requires students to sit and pass their exam papers at the end of the course.

No. While Further Pure Maths or Additional Maths are helpful qualifications prior to A‑Level study, they are not requirements. However, students planning further study in Mathematics should strongly consider taking one if their school offers it.

Mathematical skills are cumulative. An IGCSE in Mathematics is not strictly necessary for studying the subject at IBDP or A‑Level, particularly if a school follows a different curriculum, but students will typically be asked to complete a benchmark test before being admitted to the subject at the next level.

Following standard exam technique is essential: lay out workings clearly and logically, and never skip steps. Students often lose marks because they have not clarified their reasoning sufficiently for examiners. BartyED’s tutors work specifically on this with students to minimise needless mark loss.

CAIE and Edexcel are the two largest exam boards offering IGCSE Maths. While there are differences in content and test format, both offer rigorous exams that are broadly equal in difficulty. The exam board is usually chosen by the school rather than the student.

A qualified and experienced IGCSE Maths tutor can provide significant benefit, whether a student is struggling or seeking extension work. Beyond providing resources and additional practice opportunities, a strong IGCSE Maths tutor such as those at BartyED offers sound advice and consistent support throughout the course.
