IGCSE TUTORING
Expert IGCSE Physics Tutors
in Hong Kong
IGCSE Physics offers students a taster of the foundations of Physics, including thermal physics, electricity and magnetism and properties of waves (including light and sound). Since IGCSE Physics is often a learner's first formal introduction to studying Physics, they can run into a myriad of problems without an IGCSE Physics tutor. Over the years, BartyED Physics tutors have seen candidates struggle to interpret graphs, comprehend the units of the parameters and with the conceptual foundations of the course in general.
Common IGCSE Physics challenges
| The challenge | How BartyED helps |
|---|---|
|
Increasingly challenging content |
IGCSE Physics students are expected to understand and apply difficult and nuanced concepts such as light refraction, parallel circuits, and nuclear atoms. BartyED's IGCSE Physics tutors will cover each area in detail, breaking down larger, overwhelming topics into smaller and more manageable sections. |
|
Tackling abstract material |
The litany of abstract and complex concepts thrown at learners often leads them to memorise formulas rather than take the time needed to understand the material. BartyED IGCSE Physics tuition will help learners address these issues by encouraging them to move away from blind formula memorisation and instead prioritise active, visual reasoning. For example, having students sketch diagrams or using real-world analogies to assist with abstract concepts. |
|
Understanding command words |
Students routinely lose marks by misinterpreting what the examiner is asking them to do. For example, questions that require candidates to “state and explain” require a causal chain. Our tutors will support students in expanding both the detail and precision of their responses, moving beyond descriptions of events to explain why they happened by outlining the reasons and relationships at play. |
BartyED ensures high-quality IGCSE Physics tutoring
From our strict hiring process, through our comprehensive on-going tutor training, BartyED places a strong emphasis on teaching quality. Our reputation for rigour is at the heart of what we do.

| Quality marker | What it involves | Impact on teaching |
|---|---|---|
3-phase hiring process |
Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style. |
A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants. |
Rigorous training programme |
Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies. |
The exam boards know their own specifications, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects. |
On-going professional development |
Whether in exam board workshops on the latest changes to the IGCSE Physics specifications and marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, our IGCSE Physics tutors enjoy continued professional development. |
International curricula like the IBDP, A-Levels and IGCSEs are subject to change and adaptation. It's essential for teaching quality that our IGCSE Physics tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students. |

WHAT CLIENTS SAY
Success stories
Our students have gone on to Oxford, Edinburgh, UCL, Duke, Brown, and Harvard.
IGCSE Physics exam boards
IGCSE Physics is offered by three main exam boards: Cambridge International (CIE), Pearson Edexcel, and Oxford AQA. These exam boards all cover similar or identical topics within their curriculum, sharing the vast majority of key content across their respective syllabuses. However, they do differ in their assessment structure and overall approach.

| Exam board | Syllabus approach | Assessment structure | Grading scale |
|---|---|---|---|
Cambridge International (CIE) |
Uses a structured approach built around core concepts, tiered ability levels, and practical investigative skills. CIE is often considered to be a slightly more conceptual syllabus. |
Typically requires 3 papers (Paper 1/2 for multiple choice, Paper 3/4 for theory, and Paper 5/6 for practical or alternative-to-practical). |
Cambridge offers two grading scales for their IGCSE Physics pathways: the A* to G grading scale or the 9 to 1. |
Pearson Edexcel |
Focused on building foundational physics theory and practical skills for a smooth transition into Edexcel's A-Level syllabus. Edexcel is often viewed as a more straightforward exam board: strongly aligned to standard UK GCSE question styles and more accessible question scaling. |
Usually requires 2 papers (Paper 1 covering broader physics topics, and Paper 2 covering more specialised content) with mixed question types. |
Graded on the 9 to 1 scale. |
Oxford AQA |
Focused on real-world applications and enquiry-based learning. |
Uses 2 papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2, 90 minutes each and split 50/50 in weight). |
Graded on the 9 to 1 scale. |
WHAT WE COVER
Explore other subjects we tutor
The ‘best’ exam board for IGCSE Physics is entirely dependent on a student's unique learning style and exam preference. For instance, the concept-driven nature of the CIE syllabus often requires deeper critical thinking and strong scientific reasoning. This exam board is subsequently preferred for students who excel at problem-solving or enjoy theoretical depth. Alternatively, many favour the Edexcel assessment structure, which offers both linear and modular pathways. This can allow students to sit or resit individual units, instead of relying on a single exam.
Yes, all major IGCSE Physics exam boards cover very similar core physics topics. These include fundamental areas such as forces and motion, energy and energy transfers, waves, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics and states of matter, and nuclear physics.
For Edexcel and AQA, core formulas and key equations are provided in the exam. For CIE, no formula sheet is provided. Nevertheless, a formula sheet will only take students so far. Knowing how to apply and understand these formulas is essential for exam success.
