Who needs an SAT tutor?

The SAT is a stalwart of the US university admissions process. While some schools have explored test-optional alternatives in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, most competitive universities still utilise SAT. A high score on the SAT means students will have access to scholarship opportunities, as well as help to offset a lower GPA. Performing well in the exam can encourage admissions officers to overlook weaknesses in other areas as well as help students to stand out. Consequently, any student can benefit from an experiences SAT tutor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SAT still relevant?

Yes, the SAT is still relevant. Though the SAT was deemed ‘optional’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this decision has been reversed in many cases. The SAT (and ACT) is the most commonly used assessment for admission into US universities, and is used to gauge candidates’ academic skills for a strong indication of readiness for college. Tutoring programmes often help candidates maximize their SAT test scores.

What are the SAT exam dates?

The SAT is offered internationally across seven months of the year. These are August, October, November, December, March, May, and June. Registration for the SAT in advance is required, as is tutoring, so students should plan ahead.

Where can I take the SAT in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong SAT test centre locations vary by exam date, with various schools, hotels, and exam centres opening their doors to invigilate the SAT exams. Generally, Asia World Expo is open on all testing dates and has the most seats available. While BartyED’s tutors and tutoring programmes offer some exams under our supervision, this is not the case with the SAT.

What is the SAT essay?

The SAT essay is an optional section of the standardized test, and is not included in the overall score. The essay tests analysis of rhetorical techniques and commentary on persuasive skills in a speech, article, or similar text type. Given how few international schools emphasise these skills in such a format, SAT tutoring for a solid essay is crucial. Though the essay section is optional, colleges may take performance into account in the admissions process, especially for more competitive schools.

What’s the best way to study for the SAT?

The best ways to study for the SAT without a tutor is to work through past papers, and read through mark schemes and answer explanations. There are also helpful online prep resources such as Khan Academy, or SAT-style quizzes and exercises—but it is important to note that these are not always relevant and accurate.

BartyED’s expert SAT tutors advise candidates to read as widely and as much as possible. The Reading section contains extracts from classic literature and scientific articles, so students should go into the test feeling confident about reading more archaic language as well as scientific jargon. Tutoring is one way to increase confidence here. This will be massively beneficial as it develops a feel for the conventions of academic American English, and develop an intuitive understanding of what is right and wrong in the test.

Why is having an SAT tutor so important?

It is important to have an SAT tutor because a trained and experienced specialist will be able to help maximise your child’s performance and chances of getting into the university of their choice.
