IGCSE TUTORING

Expert IGCSE Chemistry Tutors
in Hong Kong

IGCSE Chemistry is usually a compulsory subject for IGCSE students, and many candidates find it hard to excel in. The subject provides important foundations for chemistry theory and applications by helping learners understand topics such as reactivity, stoichiometry and organic chemistry. Without the help of IGCSE Chemistry tuition, candidates tend to struggle with conceptual understanding and especially application. BartyED IGCSE Chemistry tutors have seen learners struggle with stoichiometric calculations, applying reactivity theory, exam technique and other skills that are crucial for top marks in the examination.

As exam season nears, candidates lacking confidence or fundamental conceptual knowledge may choose to overload themselves with IGCSE Chemistry past papers, instead of taking the time to develop their conceptual understanding. This is where private tutoring comes in. BartyED IGCSE Chemistry tutors have extensive experience in coaching students in an engaging and rigorous manner that leads to top marks.

The challenge How BartyED helps

Conceptual understanding over memorisation

IGCSE Chemistry is predominantly the study of abstract concepts such as atoms, ions, electrons, and molecules. A BartyED Chemistry tutor will help to develop a learner's conceptual understanding by transforming this invisible particle-level theory into tangible models and real-world analogies. By helping students to visualise complex material and applying them to everyday logic, IGCSE learners will develop a deeper understanding of abstract theories, rather than simply a list of facts.

Mathematical reasoning

IGCSE Chemistry requires an array of quantitative skills. Our tutors will ensure that students avoid common pitfalls that routinely result in lost marks during multi‑step calculations. For example, rounding errors, unbalanced equations, or forgotten state symbols. To avoid this, BartyED encourages mark scheme-led practice and the development of a strict workflow. Students are taught to display each step of their working, state clear observations before outlining their conclusions, and standardise their notation of equations and organic structures.

An increased pace

All IGCSE syllabuses contain a high volume of challenging material, requiring consistent memorisation. Additionally, the cumulative nature of the IGCSE Chemistry course means that it is essential students have a strong grasp of foundational concepts, such as atomic structure and bonding, in order to progress to more challenging materials. BartyED's IGCSE Chemistry tutors will cover core topic areas in extensive detail, helping students to build layers of interconnected knowledge. Our tutors will then assist students with transitioning to the course's more challenging materials: breaking down larger, overwhelming topics into smaller and more manageable sections.

BartyED ensures high-quality IGCSE Chemistry tutoring

From our strict hiring process, through our comprehensive on-going tutor training, BartyED places a strong emphasis on teaching quality. Our reputation for rigour is at the heart of what we do.

Quality marker What it involves Impact on teaching

3-phase hiring process

Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style.

A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants.

Rigorous training programme

Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies.

The exam boards know their own curricula, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects.

On-going professional development

Whether in exam board updates on the latest changes to the IGCSE Chemistry marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, our IGCSE Chemistry tutors enjoy continued professional development.

International curricula like the IBDP, A-Levels and IGCSEs are subject to change and adaptation. It's essential for teaching quality that our IGCSE Chemistry tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students.

IGCSE Chemistry exam boards

The three main international exam boards offering IGCSE Chemistry are Cambridge (CIE), Edexcel (Pearson), and OxfordAQA. These exam boards cover similar topics within their curriculum, sharing the vast majority of key content. However, they do differ in their assessment structure and overall approach.

It is worth noting that CIE IGCSE Chemistry is split into two curriculum tiers (0620 and 0971). These courses share equivalent course content and exam papers, with their difference being separate grading scales.

Exam Board Syllabus Approach Assessment Structure Grading Scale

Cambridge International (CIE) (0620 or 0971)

Covers 12 main topics ranging from atomic structure and stoichiometry to organic chemistry and the environment.

Students are required to sit three distinct papers: one multiple-choice, one theory, and one practical paper.

Cambridge offers two grading scales for their IGCSE Chemistry pathways: 0620 uses the A* to G grading scale and 0971 uses the 9 to 1.

Pearson Edexcel

Organised into four main content areas: Principles of Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.

Assessed entirely through two exam papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Graded on the 9 to 1 scale.

OxfordAQA

Spans 10 key sections covering chemical changes, bonding, quantitative chemistry, and organic chemistry.

Assessed entirely through two exam papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Graded on the 9 to 1 scale.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we get asked most about IGCSE Chemistry.

The hardest IGCSE science depends on a learner's personal strengths. Candidates who struggle with abstract theory, multi-step maths, and practical laboratory skills will often find IGCSE Chemistry to be the most difficult.

Learners report that electrolysis, chemical equilibria, and stoichiometry frequently present themselves as the most challenging IGCSE topics. Areas that provide the most difficulty typically involve heavy quantitative maths, abstract particle-level reasoning, or extensive multi-step concepts.

Students do not have to excel at advanced maths in order to succeed within IGCSE Chemistry. In fact, calculations within the exam will only require a basic knowledge of arithmetic, percentages, ratios, simple algebra, unit conversions, and graph interpretation. Mastering these foundational concepts and showing their working is sufficient for achieving top marks.
