Common IBDP Chemistry challenges
Application of knowledge in exam scenarios
One of the trickiest parts of exam preparations for any Chemistry student is determining how best to apply their knowledge to exam questions. Our IB Chemistry tutors use exam question analysis to help students identify opportunities for knowledge application.
Selecting an effective IA topic (Internal Assessment)
BartyED’s IB Chemistry tutors have a wealth of experience in guiding Chemistry students to develop effective IA topics. They take into consideration everything from deadlines, to personal interest, to how it might be used on a future university application.
Organic analysis (Paper 2)
Our IB Chemistry tutors proceed systematically through each analytical test to ensure that students can confidently identify the organic compounds in these challenging exam questions
Unseen data analysis (Paper 1B)
BartyED’s IB Chemistry tutors work with clients over the long term, prioritising the mastery of essential scientific skills like unseen data analysis. Our Chemistry students take Paper 1B in full confidence that they are well prepared for any challenging graph analysis questions.
BartyED ensures high-quality IB Chemistry tutoring
From our strict hiring process, through our comprehensive on-going tutor training, BartyED places a strong emphasis on teaching quality. Our reputation for rigour is at the heart of what we do.
3-phase hiring process
Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style.
A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants.
Rigorous training programme
Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies.
The IB examiners know their own curriculum, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects.
On-going professional development
Whether in IBO-led workshops on the latest changes to the Extended Essay marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, BartyED's IB tutors enjoy continued professional development.
International curricula like the IBDP, A-Levels and IGCSEs are subject to change and adaptation. It's essential for teaching quality that our IB tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students.
THE BARTYED DIFFERENCE
Why BartyED for IB Chemistry Tutoring
IB Chemistry-specialist tutors
Our full-time Chemistry tutors have studied at Durham, HKU and Oxford, developing strong scientific skills in the laboratory and the classroom. They understand the IB syllabus inside and out.
Exam technique for Chemistry
IB Chemistry students are required to apply knowledge from the course to unexpected exam questions. Our IB Chemistry tutors are thoroughly trained in preparing students to tackle their exams with confidence.
Internal assessment support
BartyED’s IB Chemistry tutors are experienced in guiding students to IA topics that are well-developed and show academic rigour. We ensure that each IA topic makes sense for that student, rather than selecting from a pre-written list of generic experiments.
Personally vetted by Jerome, our Managing Director
Every BartyED IB Chemistry tutor sits a supervised written exam reviewed personally by Jerome and the Head of the relevant Department before joining the team. For Chemistry, this includes sitting an IB Chemistry paper under timed conditions.

Success stories
Our students have gone on to Oxford, Edinburgh, UCL, Duke, Brown, and Harvard.
How IB Chemistry is Graded
IB Chemistry develops students’ scientific knowledge and reasoning skills across a number of topics. It is graded across two external assessments (with Paper 1 being split between 1A and 1B), as well as the Internal Assessment. The scores of these assessments are weighted and result in a grade out of 7.
Paper 1A: Multiple-choice questions
Paper 1B: Data-based questions
1A: Students respond to multiple choice questions.
1B: Students respond in short answers to data analysis questions.
Combined, there are 55 marks available and it is worth 36% of the final grade (1 hour 20 minutes).
1A: Students respond to multiple choice questions.
1B: Students respond in short answers to data analysis questions.
Combined, there are 75 marks available and it is worth 36% of the final grade (1 hour 20 minutes).
Paper 2: Short answer and extended response questions
Students respond to both short answer and extended response questions across the full range of Chemistry topics. There are 50 marks available, and it is worth 44% of the final grade (1 hour 30 minutes).

Internal Assessment
Students conduct a scientific investigation on a Chemistry topic of their choice. This is then graded internally by their teacher, and moderated by the IB. It is worth 20% of the final grade.

Outside of lengthier external assessments for both Paper 1 and 2, IB Chemistry HL students learn additional content, with significantly more time devoted to topics such as reactivity.
The Chemistry IA is graded internally, resulting in a mark out of 24. The grades are subsequently moderated and verified by the IB at the end of the course.
Paper 1B in Chemistry is challenging, as students are confronted with unseen data analysis. Presented with a series of tables and graphs, students must use their knowledge to respond to short answer questions efficiently and accurately.
The Chemistry IA counts for 20% of the final grade.
The relative difficulty of Chemistry and Biology is dependent on student preference. IB Chemistry requires less memorisation, but the application of knowledge is arguably trickier. Students should play to their strengths when selecting their IB course load.
There isn't a substantial difference in the difficulty of IB and A-Level Chemistry. In fact, much of the material covered is very similar. If hesitating between the paths, students should consult with an academic advisor or mentor.
