The IB Maths AI course is divided into five core topics:

Though both IB Maths AI and AA share the core topics, they differ significantly in focus, teaching depth, and calculator use. Rigorous training programme

Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies.

The IB examiners know their own curriculum, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects.

IB Maths AI is assessed through examination papers as well as a coursework component referred to as an Internal Assessment, or IA.

Paper 1 (External Assessment)

Paper 1 assesses a student's understanding of real-world data and concepts and is split into two sections, both consisting of short-response questions. Calculators are required in the exam. (1 hour 30 minutes, worth 40% of the final grade)

All topics should be vetted by a teacher and tutor before a student moves ahead with the task, to ensure a level of quality control from the start. (Worth 20% of the final grade)

The questions we get asked most about IB Maths AI.

The IA is marked under the following criteria: Criterion A: Problem specification (4 marks) Criterion B: Abstraction (6 marks) Criterion C: Computation (4 marks) Criterion D: Interpretation (6 marks)

Both the Maths AA and AI Internal Assessments share a structure and are graded using the same assessment criteria. However, IAs for the courses differ in focus. IAs for Maths AA will focus on exploring an abstract mathematical concept, deriving formulas, or mathematical proofs. IAs for Maths AI explore statistical analysis, data modeling, and solving practical, real-world problems using technology.

Maths AI is tailored for learners aspiring towards careers or further studies in social sciences, due to the statistical and data-handling intuition the course develops. It is also appropriate for students prioritising the Humanities.

Calculators are required for all IB Maths AI exams. As a result, mastery of a graphic display calculator is essential. A tutor can assist learners in performing advanced functions.

In Maths AI, the official IB Formula Booklet is provided for all exams. A tutor will routinely stress the importance of knowing when and how to apply these formulas. These formulas must be treated as a tool for problem-solving, rather than an answer in themselves.

For the assessment in 2029, the Maths AI topics have been reorganised into five sections. These are: Topic A: Functions Topic B: Number and algebra Topic C: Geometry Topic D: Probability and statistics Topic E: Calculus For this syllabus update, no content has been added. Rather, it has been reduced. For instance, at SL, logarithms and the trapezoidal rule have been removed; at HL, complex numbers, the vector product, the Poisson distribution and three hypothesis tests no longer feature.

For the 2029 exam, which begins teaching in August 2027, the Maths AI assessment format remains similar, though exam papers are slightly shorter and more focused. SL Paper 1 & Paper 2: Marks are reduced to 75 marks per paper (previously 80 marks). HL Paper 1 & Paper 2: Marks are reduced to 100 marks per paper (previously 110 marks). HL Paper 3: Time is shortened to 60 minutes (previously 1 hour and 15 minutes) and marked out of 50 (previously 55). The IA still makes up 20% of a learner's final grade.

An expert tutor primarily recommends the use of past papers for independent revision. Timed practice of mock exam questions will help candidates to improve their recall, application, and time management skills. Timed exam practice will also allow a tutor to provide targeted support through a detailed review of errors and areas of concern. It is worth noting that past papers from the current syllabus (2021 onwards) will not map directly onto the new course structure. Students beginning the IB in 2027 should use current papers for technique practice, but align topic revision to the new syllabus once official materials are available.
