How IB Chinese B is assessed
Chinese B HL and SL share the same assessment components but differ in the nature of the tasks. HL Paper 1 expects more complex language and structures, and HL Paper 2 involves the analysis of literary texts rather than the non‑literary texts set at SL. The final score is awarded on the standard IB scale from 1 to 7.

How IB Chinese Ab Initio is assessed
IB Chinese Ab Initio is offered as a Standard Level course only. As with Chinese B, students are assessed on their ability to understand and use language across a range of contexts and purposes. Ab Initio students are also required to analyse the ideas presented in a range of stimuli.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we get asked most about IB Chinese B and Ab Initio.
The Chinese Internal Assessment is the Individual Oral, a prepared oral presentation. Rather than being marked out of 40 (as is the case for Language A courses), the Chinese B Individual Oral is marked out of 30. BartyED’s team supports students at each stage of the process, from drafting and preparing the presentation to responding to unexpected teacher questions.
Paper 2 tests a student’s ability to extract main ideas, make inferences, and understand the tone and audience of three audio and three text passages. It does not test factual knowledge.
At BartyED, we recommend writing your Extended Essay in a language in which you are fully fluent. The EE requires a high standard of research and written expression, and fluency is essential to meeting that standard.
A‑Level Chinese places stronger demands on essay‑writing, cultural analysis, and translation than IB Chinese at language acquisition level, making it the harder curriculum in terms of academic focus. That said, A‑Level students study only three or four subjects, so they typically have more time to devote to each one.
