How the Extended Essay is Graded
Unlike other IBDP subjects, the EE is not marked out of 7. Instead, it is marked out of 30 and this score is then converted into a letter grade (A-E). It’s important to understand that, alongside TOK results, this feeds into the ‘core points matrix’ with a total of 3 points available at the end of the programme.

The IBDP Extended Essay is a compulsory 4,000 research essay based on a research question devised by the student. Aimed at improving students' research skills, the EE is a challenging but rewarding component of the IBDP.
The Extended Essay is marked by external examiners, and results in a mark out of 30. This is then converted into a letter grade (A-E) before finally being put into the core points matrix.
Interdisciplinary EEs can be a fantastic opportunity for students to explore topics that they find exciting, but there are notable challenges. Foremost is the fact that students taking that pathway must include frameworks and concepts from both subjects, which can be tricky to manage for those unfamiliar with research methods in either subject.
The Extended Essay and TOK grades contribute equally to the core points matrix, to a maximum of 3. To earn the maximum of 3 points, students can earn an A in both subjects, or an A and a B.
The EE's difficulty varies depending on the research question. To have a stress-free experience, BartyED's team advises making sure that the question is well-developed and focused.
The final form of the research question depends entirely on the project. However, it's best to pursue a project that is narrow in scope (e.g. a single text for an English EE). This will allow you to stay focused throughout the essay.
