FOR PRE-IB STUDENTS

BartyED’s IBDP Bridging Programme

The summer before the first year of the IBDP is crucial for consolidating a firm foundation. BartyED’s Bridging Programme focuses on English, Maths, and critical thinking skills to prepare students for the demands ahead.

English

Tutors workshop the analytical thinking and writing skills that underpin all diploma‑level study. Candidates study poetry and prose from the Jacobeans through to the present day. As learners examine these texts, tutors concurrently build the essay‑writing skills needed to tackle all IBDP subjects.

Maths

The programme consolidates Maths topics candidates should already know by year one of the IBDP, customised to the learner’s chosen pathway, SL or HL, Analysis and Approaches, or Applications and Interpretation. Tutors also introduce topics in advance to ensure strong performance from the outset.

HL subject support

Bridging Programme tutors help students select an HL subject such as Biology, History, or Global Politics for additional support. Tutors ensure learners understand and can apply the abstract concepts they will encounter from the start of the course.

TOK support

Theory of Knowledge is structured unlike any other IB subject and requires well‑developed critical thinking. Bridging Programme tutors offer select sessions introducing the structure of the course and key concepts including Areas of Knowledge, analytical frameworks, and epistemology.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING YEAR TWO

BartyED’s IBDP Acceleration Programme

A successful IB student uses the summer before their final year strategically. BartyED’s Acceleration Programme delivers targeted, one‑to‑one support to progress the Extended Essay, consolidate subject knowledge, and sharpen exam technique ahead of the final examinations.

Extended Essay support and tutoring

BartyED’s tutors have expertise in supervising the Extended Essay research and writing process. Our one‑to‑one tuition provides invaluable support in consolidating research skills and guiding candidates to produce an organised Extended Essay in the top mark band.

Individualised subject IB tutoring

BartyED’s Acceleration Programme offers one‑to‑one tutoring and group classes to consolidate content across specific IBDP subjects. Sessions prioritise understanding and applying material from year one and year two, whilst building the exam technique and revision strategies students need for the final examinations.

BartyED ensures high‑quality IB summer tutoring

Quality marker What it involves Impact on teaching

3‑phase hiring process

Our 3‑phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style.

A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants.

Rigorous training programme

Once hired, candidates undergo a six‑month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies.

The IB examiners know their own curriculum, so it’s essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects.

On‑going professional development

Whether in IBO‑led workshops on the latest changes to the Extended Essay marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, BartyED’s tutors enjoy continued professional development.

International curricula like the IBDP are subject to change and adaptation. It’s essential for teaching quality that our tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students.

Common IBDP challenges

The challenge How BartyED helps

Feeling overwhelmed by deadlines

Without preparation during the summer, IB students often find themselves overwhelmed when deadlines pile up during term time. BartyED’s summer programmes build the organisational skills and subject knowledge that allow students to manage the IBDP’s demands with confidence.

Gaps in foundational knowledge

The IBDP assumes a level of prior knowledge that not all students arrive with equally. BartyED’s Bridging Programme identifies and addresses each learner’s specific gaps in English, Maths, and their chosen HL subject before the first year begins.

Structuring the Extended Essay

Candidates often struggle to research and structure their Extended Essays to a sufficiently high level, losing marks that are well within reach. BartyED’s tutors guide students through the research and writing process, from choosing a question to producing a final draft in the top mark band.

Exam technique and revision strategy

Knowing the content is only part of the challenge. BartyED’s Acceleration Programme tutors work explicitly on exam technique and revision strategies, ensuring students translate their knowledge into marks in the final examinations.
