How A-Level Maths is graded
A-Level Maths is graded using a linear letter scale from A* to U (E is the lowest passing grade). Since there is no coursework component, a candidate's final grade depends entirely on the marks accumulated across their final exam papers. Grade boundaries are adjusted each year after the exams are marked, based on test difficulty and the specific cohort's performance.

Sat at the end of Year 13, these exams are each marked out of 100 and each account for ⅓ of the final grade. They test the content of both years of study, and may include a combination of the following topics:

Paper 3: Applied Statistics & Mechanics |
Also sat at the end of Year 13, this exam is split in two sections: Statistics (Section A) and Mechanics (Section B). These are worth 50 marks each and account for ⅓ of the final grade. You are tested on both sections in a single sitting. Section A is focused on data analysis, probability, and hypothesis testing, while Section B models real-world situations using mathematical principles. |

These A-Level Maths courses are entirely separate, standalone qualifications, and you can only take Further Maths if you have also taken A-Level Maths. Compared with A-Level Maths, A-Level Further Maths is also faster paced and involves university-level abstraction.
Whether IB Maths is harder than A-Level Maths depends entirely on the specific level and pathway a student chooses. In general, IB Higher Level (HL) Maths is harder than standard A-Level Maths, but A-Level Maths is significantly deeper and more content-heavy than IB Standard Level (SL) Maths.
Full use of mathematical equations, including the working out, is essential for exam success and understanding clearly how to show this and tick the examiner's boxes is what BartyED's tutors teach.
