A-Level History Tutoring
How is A-Level History a challenge for students?
Long essays and a significant amount of content are just two of the major challenges waiting for A-Level History candidates. A 1.5-hour exam selecting two questions can be daunting, and knowing what it is that you need to know can be half the challenge. BartyED’s A-Level History tutors help students refine their exam technique and revision strategies in order to maximise their exam performance.
There is some variance between syllabuses but even for the same syllabus, different topics can be taught in different schools. Some might teach English history such as the Tudors, while others might consider Japanese imperialism in WWII. Identifying what the question is actually asking is also a challenge, a deep knowledge of command words can often elude students who have only been taught in the classroom environment. This is why BartyED is here, to provide expert A-Level History tutoring and learning support that is a cut above the rest.
Academically-minded students will find approaching a 30-mark question in 45 minutes a daunting task, as will neurodiverse students. Planning can often pose a challenge which also has a knock-on effect on written performance. Schools are generally reasonably effective at teaching content, but a lack of individualised feedback means most students are left with underdeveloped essay construction skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why study A-Level History?
A-Level History is internationally recognised and develops essay writing and analytical skills. For students wishing to complete a Humanities degree course, our A-Level History tutors recommends taking A-Level History as the course is highly valuable in building essay, source and analytical understanding.
Is A-Level History more difficult than IB History?
BartyED’s A-Level History tutors report that both A-Level History and IB History are challenges in their own rights. While History A-Level is predominantly exam-based, IB History has a large coursework component. It is thus important for students to consider exactly which they find more difficult.
Indeed, a further difference is that while IB History tends to be more thematic and therefore take a broader sweep of history, A-Level History can be more in-depth, focused on a particular time and the changes affecting it. Our A-Level History tutors recommends investigating the syllabus’ offered by your and other schools to assess which you will find more interesting. Both can be challenging, but both are valuable and equally well-recognised in their own right.
Do I need GCSE History to study A-Level History?
No, A-Level History does not require GCSE History if a student wishes to take it. However, it may be recommended by our A-Level History tutors that the student has some experience with the humanities and/or an essay-based subject that builds the candidates’ schema of understanding source and essay analysis.
What are good subjects to do with A-Level History?
For a Humanities focus, our A-Level History tutors suggest that good subjects with A-Level History might be Geography and/or Religious Studies. To build a more holistic and/or mathematic/scientific academic portfolio consider Economics alongside History. Nonetheless, History is a powerful stand-alone Humanities subject and can thus be paired with any other A-Levels.
