A-Level French Tutoring

How does A-Level French pose a new challenge to students?

Whether French is a students’ second or first language, the French A-Level exam can be challenging. Discussing classic literature and film and abstract concepts from health to tourism makes French a well-rounded but significant step-up from GCSE or MYP.

Complex texts and large volume of vocabulary that must be effectively memorised makes the A-Level challenging, along with the challenge of synthesising the cultural background of French literature such as Sartre, or cultural movements such as the Nouvelle-Vague in film. BartyED’s A-Level French tutors encourage students to explore all aspects of French culture and society to enhance their proficiency in vocabulary, writing and listening.

Adeptly communicating concepts such as philosophy and religion, cultural heritage and technological innovation can be difficult. Analysing texts, reading and writing, and constructing an essay on those topics can be daunting in a candidate’s first language, let alone second. Unfortunately, schools are often unable to support the kind of bespoke tutorials and mentoring needed for students to meet their expectations.

How can BartyED’s French A-Level tuition make the difference?

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you study A-Level French?

Yes, our A-Level French tutors report that having an A-Level in French alongside fluency in English and/or Mandarin is a boon to business-minded students and candidates interested in international travel. French is one of the world’s global languages along with English, Spanish and Mandarin. It shows a significant understanding of the conventions of language and demonstrates a commitment to learning.

Is A-Level French more challenging than IB French?

No, A-Level French and IB French are both a challenge in their own right, however, IB languages are particularly known for their rigour and challenge. Thus our A-Level French tutors note that students may find the IB more difficult if they are less confident with the French language. But that’s not to say that A-Level French is easy, be prepared to be stretched and become increasingly confident with both spoken and written communication.

Do I need GCSE French to study A-Level French?

No, a GCSE in French is not explicitly required to take an A-Level in French, but it is a strong recommendation by our A-Level French tutors. Demonstrating a significant competency at French is required to convince schools that they should invest in you taking A-Level French without you having previously completed a GCSE. It is not necessarily recommended, but if you are confident and interested, then forge your own path.

What are good subjects to do with A-Level French?

BartyED’s A-Level French tutors suggests that a second (or indeed third) language is an asset for any collection of subjects, it rounds out any humanities or maths-based academic subjects, but could be particularly valuable as a fourth subject to sciences and maths portfolios to show balance.
