Common IB MYP Science challenges

| The challenge | How BartyED helps |
|---|---|
|
Focus on application rather than pure knowledge testing (Criterion A) |
Whether a student takes Integrated Sciences or split sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) at MYP, they frequently hit the same academic hurdles. At BartyED, our tutors coach command terms and application just as much as we do the material itself. As such, students will learn to transfer the concepts and skills they have learned in class to global contexts without having to rely strictly on their memory. |
|
Design their own experiment from scratch (Criterion B) |
Students frequently lose marks in experimental tasks as they struggle either to formulate a hypothesis that is both testable and specific enough, or do not specify how to control the different variables. BartyED's tutors are adept in guiding students through experimental tasks from coming up with a research question to methodology to analysing and discussing the scientific data. |
|
Leaving raw data as the finished product (Criterion C) |
Analysing, interpreting and visualising raw data is crucial to a science report, not least because the information is only useful if it can be understood! Our tutors are adept at helping students to develop their data analysis skills so that they can go beyond descriptive statistics and think about the 'how', and not just the 'what'. |
|
Lack of essay writing skills (Criterion D) |
Students who perform poorly in this criterion tend to submit purely descriptive reports. BartyED's tutors encourage students to go beyond listing pros and cons, and instead present a balanced review of the evidence and discuss conflicting perspectives so that the essay is much considered and comprehensive. |
BartyED ensures high-quality MYP Science tutoring
From our strict hiring process, through our comprehensive on-going tutor training, BartyED places a strong emphasis on teaching quality. Our reputation for rigour is at the heart of what we do.

| Quality marker | What it involves | Impact on teaching |
|---|---|---|
3-phase hiring process |
Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style. |
A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants. |
Rigorous training programme |
Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies. |
The IB examiners know their own curriculum, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects. |
On-going professional development |
Whether in IBO-led workshops on the latest changes to the MYP Science marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, our MYP Science tutors enjoy continued professional development. |
International curricula like the IBDP, A-Levels and IGCSEs are subject to change and adaptation. It's essential for teaching quality that our MYP Science tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students. |
THE BARTYED DIFFERENCE
Why BartyED for MYP Science Tutoring
Science-specialist tutors
Our IB Science tutors are all top university graduates and have tutored MYP Science for multiple years. They bring a high standard of data analysis, critical thinking, and report writing skills into their IB tutoring that enables strong achievement.
Exam technique for Science
MYP Science students are expected to know how to critically evaluate information, discuss nuances, and make insightful, deeply reasoned connections. Our tutors foster a close awareness of these evaluative and reasoning skills.
General academic support
From helping to design an outstanding experiment, to drafting the presentation, to writing the best reflection, BartyED's Science tutors support students throughout the course.
Personally vetted by Jerome
Every BartyED tutor sits a supervised written exam reviewed personally by Jerome and Hannah before joining the team. For Science, this includes sitting a test paper under timed conditions, and rigorous questioning on experimental techniques and data analysis.
WHAT CLIENTS SAY
Success stories
Our students have gone on to Oxford, Edinburgh, UCL, Duke, Brown, and Harvard.
How MYP Science is graded
As with other MYP subjects, Science is graded out of 32 (8 for each criterion) which is then converted into an official IB Grade from 1 to 7.

| Component | How and what it tests |
|---|---|
Criterion A: Knowing and understanding |
Through end-of-unit tests/ MYP eAssessments, students' memory and comprehension of scientific facts, concepts, and formulae are tested. Students are also expected to demonstrate their ability to apply this knowledge to solve problems and explain phenomena. |
Criterion B: Inquiry and Designing |
Through producing the first half of a lab report (introduction and methodology), students are assessed on their ability to choose a problem, formulate a hypothesis with a clear scientific reason, and design a safe, repeatable experiment. |
Criterion C: Processing and Evaluating |
Constituting the second half of a lab report (data analysis, identifying errors, suggesting improvements), students are tested on their analytical and evaluative skills. This includes discussing the shortcomings or limitations of the experiment and how it can be improved upon. |
Criterion D: Reflecting on the Impacts of Science |
Through writing research essays and presentations, students are required to think and communicate how specific studies or areas of research impact a global factor (e.g. a policy). |
WHAT WE COVER
Explore other IB MYP subjects we tutor
In Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics topics are blended together across a single school year. In discrete sciences, subjects are separated into distinct classes in the fourth and fifth year of MYP. This means that students can choose which science they'd like to take. Whether a student studies Integrated Science or discrete sciences depends on the school.
Memorisation is not the main focus of MYP Science. Instead, the assessment will focus on whether you can apply the correct formula to an unfamiliar real-world context, explain what the numbers mean, or identify experimental uncertainties.
This is the most common frustration for new MYP students. A unit test only evaluates Criterion A, so even if you score an 8 on your tests, it is worth only one-quarter of your total grade. If you underperform on your lab reports (Criteria B & C) or your science essays (Criterion D), your overall grade will drop significantly.
Not all schools offer eAssessments, but for the schools that do, students will sit a two-hour digital exam. There are three sections and the questions are structured around the four criteria.
Make sure your essay is balanced. The IBO wants to see trade-offs, so discuss both strengths and limitations of any study or technology.
