Common MYP Math Challenges
← Scroll to see more →
| The challenge | How BartyED helps |
|---|---|
|
The 'transfer gap' (Criterion A) |
Students typically find it difficult to apply newly learned concepts and formulae to new or unfamiliar contexts. Our MYP tutors routinely coach students to problem solve within the global contexts and help students to practice their skills using exam-style questions. |
|
Stopping too early during pattern recognition tasks (Criterion B) |
Many MYP students report struggling to explain proofs mathematically, resulting in lost marks. BartyED Math tutors not only help students to consolidate content, but also help them to develop their critical reasoning skills and exam technique (justifying why the rule works rather than just identifying the numerical pattern of the first few terms) in order to gain full marks. |
|
Neglecting logical organization (Criterion C) |
Our tutors find that MYP students tend to treat the final answer as the only important part. At BartyED, our experienced Math tutors also remind students to present their steps in a clean and logical manner so they can avoid losing important marks. |
|
Lack of sensibleness checks (Criterion D) |
One of the common mistakes we see in MYP Math students is not 'sanity checking' their answers (such as calculating a negative area and moving on without flagging the error). Our MYP Math tutors are experienced in helping students to develop a habit of checking whether their answers are consistent and logical. They also help students to model the mathematical process through scaffolding to ensure a thorough understanding. |
BartyED ensures high-quality MYP Math tutoring
From our strict hiring process, through our comprehensive on-going tutor training, BartyED places a strong emphasis on teaching quality. Our reputation for rigour is at the heart of what we do.

| Quality marker | What it involves | Impact on teaching |
|---|---|---|
3-phase hiring process |
Our 3-phase hiring process consists of a structured interview with Jerome, a written exam across proposed subject areas, and an engagement session to assess teaching style. |
A strong CV is not enough: candidates need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, resilience and adaptability. We place our bar deliberately high in the full knowledge that most candidates will fail. Our students will benefit from the strong communication skills and pedagogical passion of the best applicants. |
Rigorous training programme |
Once hired, candidates undergo a six-month training programme to ensure deep subject and curriculum knowledge. This is conducted by our Heads of STEM and English/Humanities, and overseen by our Director of Studies. |
The IB examiners know their own curriculum, so it's essential that we do, too. Our training programmes are designed to instil strong academic rigour, and consistent teaching across subjects. |
On-going professional development |
Whether in IBO-led workshops on the latest changes to the MYP Math marking criteria, or knowledge sharing across the team in informal sessions to improve our support of SEN students, our MYP Math tutors enjoy continued professional development. |
International curricula like the IBDP, A-Levels and IGCSEs are subject to change and adaptation. It's essential for teaching quality that our MYP Math tutors are ready and aware of all developments so we can maintain our exemplary support of all students. |
THE BARTYED DIFFERENCE
Why BartyED for MYP Math Tutoring
Math-specialist tutors
Our MYP Math tutors have years of experience coaching Mathematics at MYP level. They are also graduates of top universities such as Durham, Imperial and Manchester, bringing a high standard of mathematical literacy into their tutoring that enables strong achievement.
Exam technique for Math
MYP Math students are expected to be able to problem solve in a variety of contexts and real-life situations. Our tutors foster a close awareness of command term to ensure that students are able to present their line of reasoning clearly, consistently and to the level required.
Personally vetted by Jerome
Every BartyED tutor sits a supervised written exam reviewed personally by Jerome and Hannah before joining the team. For MYP Math, this includes sitting a Math paper under timed conditions, and rigorous questioning on teaching style and problem solving based on different learning needs.
WHAT CLIENTS SAY
Success stories
Our students have gone on to Oxford, Edinburgh, UCL, Duke, Brown, and Harvard.
How MYP Math is graded
As mentioned above, there are four criteria in MYP Math: Criterion A (Knowing and Understanding), Criterion B (Investigating Patterns), Criterion C (Communicating) and Criterion D (Applying mathematics in real-life contexts). These are marked out of 8 each, combining for a total of 32 marks that convert into a final 1–7 subject grade.

| Assessment Component | What does it measure? |
|---|---|
Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding |
This measures students' ability to select and apply appropriate mathematics successfully when problem solving in a variety of contexts (familiar and unfamiliar). |
Criterion B: Investigating Patterns |
This measures students' ability to use mathematical problem-solving techniques to discover complex patterns, describe them as relationships consistent with findings, and to prove, verify or justify whether these relationships apply to other cases. |
Criterion C: Communicating |
This measures students' ability to use appropriate mathematical language and forms of mathematical representation to present information. It also aims to see if students can move between different forms of mathematical representation and reason mathematically in a coherent and logical manner. |
Criterion D: Applying mathematics in real-life contexts |
This measures students' ability to select and apply appropriate mathematical strategies successfully when solving authentic real-life situations. Students are also expected to explain/justify the degree of accuracy of their solution and whether it makes sense in the context of the situation. |
The MYP Math course focuses on applying mathematical concepts and skills to real-life situations, so a student who relies solely on rote memorisation will not achieve high scores.
Absolutely. Even though the formative assessments are not graded, they are an important indicator of a student's current level, where their knowledge gaps lie, and how they can improve.
The MYP eAssessments are a new form of testing system introduced by the IBO. It is administered at the end of MYP 5 (equivalent to Grade 10/Year 11), so is effectively the IBO's version of a traditional exam. However, it is fully computer-based and focuses more on critical thinking skills and application skills compared to say IGCSE Maths.
Not at all. In fact, most IB schools in Hong Kong do not currently offer MYP eAssessments as part of their curriculum. In these circumstances, students only need to get a '4' to pass Mathematics at MYP level.
Whether MYP Math is harder than IGCSE Math depends entirely on the student's mathematical strengths. MYP and IGCSE Math are demanding in completely different ways, where IGCSE Math has harder and deeper volume of content, while MYP Math has a harder and more abstract style of assessment.
