What is the IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most widely used English language qualifications in the world, accepted by over 12,000 organisations across more than 140 countries. For anyone looking to study or work in the UK, USA, Australia, or beyond, a strong IELTS score is often the first requirement.

There are three types of IELTS exam. IELTS Academic tests candidates' ability to use academic English, making it the standard requirement for university applications. IELTS General Training measures proficiency in professional and social English, and is commonly required for work visas and immigration. IELTS for UK Visas (UKVI) is designed for those applying for a UK family or settlement visa.

In Germany, IELTS testing centres are available in 13 cities with sittings multiple times per month, and online testing is available almost every day, meaning there is never a bad time to start your preparation.

What to Expect on the IELTS Exam

Both IELTS Academic and General Training consist of four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The listening and speaking sections are the same across both exams, while the reading and writing sections differ slightly in content.

  • Listening consists of 40 questions across four recordings, covering a range of formats including multiple choice, sentence completion, diagram labelling, and short answer questions.

  • Reading gives candidates 60 minutes to work through 11 different question types, from true/false exercises to matching information tasks. The texts differ between Academic and General Training, but the question formats are the same.

  • Writing is also 60 minutes and consists of two tasks. In the Academic exam, candidates describe a visual (such as a graph or diagram) in 150 words, then respond to an argument in 250 words. In the General Training exam, the first task is a 150-word letter, followed by the same 250-word argument response.

  • Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner lasting 11 to 14 minutes, split into three parts: a general conversation, an extended individual talk, and a structured discussion. Achieving a 7.0 or above requires fluency, a broad vocabulary, accurate grammar, and clear pronunciation.
