Selecting a college or university is one of the most important decisions a young person can make. It requires careful planning and consideration, with thought given to factors including course availability, location, and cost. What is important is that the individual finds a course that resonates with them and sparks interest, as well as a college or university that appears to be a good fit for them as a person. This means that soon-to-be college or university students should spend time combing through college and university websites, looking not only at course content but also the amenities present in each institution and what values each college or university seeks to foster and promote. Such a decision should never be taken lightly.
College and university tours
While a virtual tour via a college or university website is beneficial to future students, much can be said for an in-person visit. By taking the time to visit prospective colleges and universities, a student can get a deeper sense of the atmosphere of each institution and whether it is well suited to their personality. Moreover, it allows a certain degree of comfort to be established as the student will have some idea of the campus layout and the general environment of the college or university before their first day in tertiary education. Of course, college and university tours may not always be possible. There may be financial or logistical reasons that make such tours difficult. However, if it can be done, it is recommended.
The admissions process
Once a student has come to a decision on which colleges and universities interest them most, it is essential to examine each institution's admissions process. If a student is interested solely in U.K. based universities then they will proceed with the UCAS, with the Personal Statement proving a central component. If a student is drawn towards the U.S. for college, they will, more than likely, complete the Common App essay and a number of supplemental essays unique to each college they apply for. Regardless of the location, it is essential that careful attention be paid to the admissions process.
