Understanding IELTS

What Is the IELTS?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English language proficiency test, typically taken by those looking to work, live, or study in an English-speaking country. There are two types of IELTS tests: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Academic IELTS is catered towards international students who are looking to pursue higher education in the U.K. General IELTS is for those planning on moving to an English-speaking country, focusing on social and survival skills, as well as workplace language. Both IELTS results are recognised by universities and employers worldwide. It is also the only English test accepted by all immigration authorities requiring proof of English proficiency.

When Do I Need to Take the IELTS?

Candidates will take the IELTS test depending on their unique requirements and ambitions. Those aiming for international study in the autumn intake will generally take the IELTS exam during spring of the same year. IELTS test centres are readily available with more flexible test dates and slots and candidates are encouraged to ensure adequate time for preparation and study. Candidates can also retake the IELTS exam as many times as needed, and can even retake one skill, rather than the full test. Tests can be taken remotely online or at an IELTS test centre. It is worth noting that the IELTS certificate is valid for only 2 years.

How Can I Study for the IELTS?

There are four sections to the IELTS: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Initially, it is important to understand the format for each of these sections. In both the General Training and the Academic tests, the Speaking and Listening sections are the same. However, the Reading and Writing sections of these tests differ. With a better understanding of the structure of the test, candidates can begin more focused preparations. IELTS provides an array of practice materials for each of these sections - all of which are free of charge and easy to access online. Candidates should also make use of the variety of books, apps, and websites that are available to them.

Tips and Strategies for Students Studying for the IELTS

A top strategy for preparing for any exam is consistency. Creating a study schedule can help candidates to maintain discipline and make the most of any time available. Candidates should also familiarise themselves with the IELTS assessment criteria, as well as model answers for each section, in order to better understand exactly what the examiners will be looking for. Finally, one of the best ways to prepare for the IELTS is to immerse one’s self in the English language. For instance, reading a diverse range of articles to improve reading comprehension, particularly in a variety of formats, or listening to English podcasts to strengthen listening skills.

Common IELTS Pitfalls and Mistakes

Even advanced English learners make common mistakes in their IELTs test, particularly in the writing section. For example, grammatical errors are a common sticking point for many. It is important to keep in mind that IELTS examiners are instead looking for well-written sentences that accurately present a clear message. When preparing for the test, candidates should review model answers and practice incorporating a similar style. In Speaking Part 2, candidates are expecting to speak for 1-2 minutes on a particular topic. A common pitfall in this section is not utilising this time, as many candidates will only speak for one minute. Practice can make a huge difference, and candidates can prepare for the test by setting 2 minute timers and challenging themselves to speak on a certain topic for the entirety of this time.

Using Revision Resources to Study for the IELTS

There are a variety of revision resources available for the IELTS, from videos to practice tests and online courses. The official IELTS website contains a plethora of sample tests, information, and useful books including the Cambridge Guide to IELTS series and IELTS Trainer. Candidates are encouraged to use these revision materials to stimulate real IELTS test conditions. After each practice, candidates should mark their work and ensure they review any difficult sections. Making flashcards for new phrases or tricky question types is a useful method for the reading, writing, and listening sections, and practice with a partner or tutor can help candidates to massively improve their English speaking skills.
