Is the SAT still optional?

An overview of the SAT

The SAT is one of two standardised examinations used for U.S. college admissions. The SAT is a multiple choice exam consisting of a little over 150 questions. These questions are divided across two subjects, Mathematics and English, with two sections per subject. To complete the SAT takes roughly three hours.

The SAT is not the only U.S. college admissions examination. Students may choose to sit the ACT exam, which consists of questions in Mathematics, English, and Science. However, for U.S. admissions candidates who consider themselves to be stronger in Mathematics, the SAT is the preferred examination.

Is the SAT optional?

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. colleges—including some of the most prestigious institutions in the country, such as Harvard, Cornell, and Stanford— experimented with alternative admission processes. However, this decision has been reserved and the SAT is returning to prominence. Consequently, U.S. college applications should take care to review the admissions processes for their prospective schools. Do not assume the ‘test-optional’ ruling remains.

Benefits of the SAT

An impressive SAT score allows students, particularly those applying outside of the U.S., to set themselves apart from other applicants. Considering the competitive nature of the U.S. college admissions, a highly marked SAT is a significant factor in pushing candidates ahead and into their dream U.S. college. Furthermore, an outstanding SAT can open the doors to significant academic scholarships that can be of great benefit to students and their families.
