IGCSE Depth Studies

Explaining the IGCSE Depth Studies

The Cambridge IGCSE history course is broken down into Core Options and Depth Studies. IGCSE history students will study either Core Option A—The nineteenth century: the development of modern nation states, 1848–1914—or Core Option B—The twentieth century: international relations since 1919. The Depth Studies refer to a list of seven topics ranging from the First World War to Apartheid-era South Africa. Of these seven, IGCSE history candidates must explore at least one. Consequently, the Depth Studies component is a significant portion of the IGCSE history course.

Depth Studies, examinations, and coursework

All IGCSE history students are required to complete a Paper 1 and Paper 2 examination, as well as coursework. With regard to Depth Studies, the most relevant aspects of the course are Paper 1 and the coursework.

The IGCSE history Paper 1 is a two hour written examination that is weighted at 40%. Candidates must complete two questions from their Core Option and one question related to their Depth Study. Regarding coursework, which is allotted 27% of the overall IGCSE history grade, candidates must complete one piece of extended writing—roughly 2000 words—based on a Depth Study from the IGCSE history syllabus.

Starting off on the right foot

For those studying IGCSE history, it is easy to get bogged down. The course content is intimidating and the examinations and coursework are formidable tasks for even the most adept students. Yet, there are ways to ensure success. It is important that IGCSE history candidates start off on the right foot and familiarise themselves with the IGCSE history syllabus via the syllabus guide. This will help gain an understanding of how and on what they will be graded. Moreover, as the course is essay-based, both with regard to the examinations and the Depth Studies coursework, it is essential that time be taken to honing writing skills. To do this, students should explore past exam papers, plan and respond to the questions asked and, over time, refine these essays in regard to the exam mark schemes. This will ensure familiarity with the types of questions asked in the IGCSE history exam, both for Core Options and Depth Studies questions, while also improving written expression and time management.
