IB Global Politics Paper 3: What to Expect and How to Prepare

What is the IB Global Politics Course?

Global Politics is a complex subject that offers IB students the opportunity to explore the intricacies of political activity within local, national, international and global dimensions. Before endeavoring to study the subject, it is important that IB candidates know about the Global Politics course itself, particularly as the syllabus has recently changed for the exam year 2026 and onwards.

Regardless of whether an IB learner is taking Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), all must complete one core unit and three thematic studies.

Core Unit:

  • Understanding Power and Global Politics

Thematic Studies:

  • Rights & Justice

  • Development and Sustainability

  • Peace and Conflict

All IB Global Politics students must sit two exam papers, with HL learners also assigned a third paper. Additionally, both HL and SL candidates are required to complete an internal assessment.

How IB Global Politics Is Assessed

As noted above, those taking IB Global Politics must sit exams and complete an internal assessment, or IA.

Paper One is 1 hour and 15  minutes in length and requires students to engage with four source-based questions. For those taking HL, Paper One is worth 20% of their total grade; for SL learners it is worth 30%.

In the case of Paper Two, the exam differs depending on whether a student is taking Global Politics at HL or SL. At Higher Level, candidates must complete two essays from a choice of topics across the four subject units. This exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes in length and worth 40% of the total grade. For those taking Standard Level, IB Global Politics candidates compose one essay from a choice of topics according to the four subject units. Weighted at 45%, SL learners have 1 hour and 45 minutes for the task.

For Higher Level Global Politics students only, there is a Paper Three component. This is worth 30% of the final grade and candidates have 1 hour and 30 minutes to respond to three stimulus-based questions related to the 8 global political challenges (GPC) from the course:

  1. Technology

  2. Equality

  3. Borders

  4. Environment

  5. Poverty

  6. Identity

  7. Security

  8. Health

The last point of note regarding assessments is that all IB Global Politics learners must complete an Internal Assessment, also commonly referred to as an Engagement Project. This task takes the form of a written report on a political issue of interest to the student and should involve engaging with individuals with some relationship to the issue, as well as incorporating primary and secondary sources. The IA is valued at 20% for HL students and 30% for SL students.

What is IB Global Politics Paper 3?

Paper 3 is a new syllabus component, introduced for the 2026 exam and beyond. As previously mentioned, Paper 3 is a stimulus or sourced-based paper concerned with the 8 HL extension global political challenges. The stimulus text may include text, data, diagrams, and infographics, so it is necessary that those taking IB Global Politics at Higher Level are confident in their abilities to interpret a variety of methods of communication. The aim of the Paper 3 is to direct candidates’ attention to a particular topic from the HL extension for analysis and discussion. The evidence that HL learners utilise for their responses should be drawn from the case studies they have researched, while also employing course concepts from the core and thematic units.

IB Global Politics Paper 3 and Its Challenges

The most immediate challenge with regard to Paper 3 in Global Politics is the fact that this is a new paper. Consequently, there is little information to draw from to direct students. For example, there are no past papers to give clear insight into the precise language used or the frequency of question types. This uncertainty poses the greatest challenge for HL Global Politics students. Beyond this, there is, of course, the difficulty in memorising a wide range of case studies such that any question that is asked can be answered with ease and accuracy.

How to Prepare for Paper 3

To best prepare for Paper 3, it is recommended that IB Global Politics students engage with the stimulus paper available. While this is, of course, not past exam papers, they are as close to the real thing as is available right now. Students should be able to receive a copy of the stimulus paper by requesting it from their Global Politics class teacher. Similarly, the stimulus paper comes with a mark scheme, which is also essential for Paper 3 preparation.

It is also recommended that students make use of official and up-to-date IB Global Politics text books, such as those produced by Pearson , Oxford, or Hodder. It is often the case that class teachers forgo the use of textbooks in favour of videos and notes. While this is, in its way, beneficial, students often feel a greater sense of ease when working from textbooks as the information is more contained. Each textbook will also offer methods of preparation for the exam which students can also utilise in their revision.
