The ACT is one of two standardized tests that are an essential part of the US college admissions process. A standardized test is an exam conducted, administered and scored in a consistent manner. In the case of the ACT, much like the other option, the SAT, this is a multiple choice exam divided into sections.

Students take the test, and their results (or ‘raw scores’) are then placed into a scoring algorithm that scales the score according to the student’s relative performance compared to the rest of the cohort. There are multiple possible sessions throughout the academic year for these exams, although they are most frequently taken towards the end of the Junior year, or start of Senior year of high school.

The ACT is split into three sections: English, Mathematics and Science. While the first two are very similar to the SAT, ACT Science is a unique exam that requires unique preparations from students.

ACT Science tests students on their general and practical knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, and the Earth/space sciences (such as geology, astronomy, and meteorology). Advanced knowledge in these subjects is not required, as ACT Science examines interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills and practices over recall of scientific content or complex mathematical skills.

ACT Science is tested through multiple-choice questions that rely on the interpretation of data. Students are asked to critically evaluate the information provided in order to make inferences about the data, and predictions for its further development.

Consequently, there is no set syllabus for ACT Science, which often leaves students questioning how they are supposed to revise and prepare for such an exam.

With 53 seconds per question, the first challenge is the time demands of the ACT Science exam. Students need to be able to quickly but accurately extract relevant scientific data, and process conflicting information presented in different forms. The ACT Science exam looks intimidating because it can include extracts from a variety of scientific areas, some of which may be unfamiliar to students. As such, students may not know where to begin revising, since the exam does not test syllabus knowledge but rather skills. Finally, students need a cross-disciplinary vocabulary for confidence in answering questions on a wide variety of sciences. These are skills that students typically find quite difficult to master without the help of an experienced tutor.
